The Yokan Collection
The National Museum is having a special exhibition today and tomorrow (28, 29 Oct)
It features beautifully handcrafted Yokan, which is a traditional Japanese dessert made of azuki beans, kanten and sugar
There is tastings available as well as live demonstrations of the preparation of yokan by famous Japanese confectionery masters.
A secret extra: There is a short demo of the tea ceremony!

Art Stores in Singapore (a work in progress)
Here are some of the better ones that I have personally visited.
Overjoyed
A charming little store situated beside LASALLE College of the Arts, Overjoyed not only sells art materials but they also offer art classes.
The great thing about this shop is that it actually has an online catalogue that you can browse before hitting the physical shop. I always check the website before going there to purchase.
However, the shop does do door to door delivery for purchases over $150.
As to the physical store itself, the outside of the shop looks very upmarket which will probably make those of us on a budget tremble in fear. The service is not too bad either, with friendly and helpful staff who entertained my numerous questions and remained polite throughout when I went there for the first time.
Product-wise, this shop carries quite a few products from paintbrushes to colour pencils, and range in quality and prices from the high grade Swiss made caran d'ache to the more familiar Prismacolour.
Another thing to note: this shop carries open stock colour pencils as well. I personally like this one as it carries Koh-i-noor products which has some budget friendly items.

Japan Calligraphy Art Academy Calligraphy Exhibition
Today marks the close of the Japan Calligraphy Art Academy Calligraphy Exhibition at The Luxe Museum.
The event was an intimate affair that ran from 20-25 October and featured works done by calligraphers of the Nihon Shodo Bijutsuin (Japan Calligraphy Art Academy).
It is the Academy's first exhibition in Singapore and as part of the event, there were daily performances by their Master Calligraphers from 2-3pm ans well as a hands-on calligraphy workshop (done on an uchiwa, a traditional fan)
I attended the event yesterday, hoping to see the Master Calligraphers performance but to no avail - it was already over so I dropped by again today, in the late afternoon.
There was quite a selection of works that ran the gamut from waka poetry to Buddhist scripture.

I was quite fascinated by the works done on Japanese decorative paper. There was one in particular that had soft pastel tones of blue and pink with silver paint spattered across that evoked the image of stars in the heavens.
